Aloha.
All of my life, there seemed to be a desire to play music in my life. During my younger years, I tried the organ. I did OK, but just never connected.
The years following, and through school, there was the saxophone, keyboard, guitar (twice), harmonica, and banjo. All of these being instruments I loved to hear. Again, never quite connecting.
I purchased a ukulele, after seeing one on the Internet. Of course, it sat around. For some reason, I bought another. Still nothing came to fruition with my playing.
Sometime in the mid to late part of 2007, I saw a television commercial for Rice Crispies. The background music touched something inside me. The music was "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" by Israel "IZ" Kamakawio'ole. The beautiful introduction to that song produced a spark inside of me. I started to pick up my ukuleles and so began my journey. The commercial can be seen below on this page.
Not long after that, a 2008 summer program at a local college was offered. Of all things it was Beginner Ukulele. Those three months of lessons, given by Hawai'ian, Greg Librando, further fanned the flames.
Since then I have become more proficient on the ukulele. I strive to be better, but I have learned that these things will come. I play really only for myself and my pleasure, as well as my family if they are lucky enough to be close by. I just really enjoy the time I spend holding my ukulele, and strumming.
I have grown a small collection of ukuleles in the past couple of years since my first one. I have enjoyed listening to Hawaiian music and learning more of the culture and history of the people of Hawai'i, and of the ukulele.
My short range plans are to start a local ukulele club. I would also like to offer introductory classes to the ukulele. I have a desire to speak on the ukulele, perhaps even to school children and possibly some library offerings as well. I am even now contemplating a nursing home visitation program featuring the ukulele.
Mahalo nui loa for stopping by. Enjoy my web site.
